rope-walk
Long twine manufactory
A rope-walk is a long, narrow building or pathway where rope is manufactured by twisting fibers while walking backward.
The process required straight runs of several hundred feet, giving these structures their distinctive elongated shape.
The term now mainly appears in historical contexts or as preserved place names: The old rope-walk has been converted to apartments.
