roly-polies

Armored garden crawlers

Roly-polies are small gray crustaceans that curl into a ball when disturbed, found under rocks and in damp soil.

Also called pill bugs or woodlice.

The name also applies to a British pudding made of suet pastry spread with jam, rolled up, and steamed or baked.

As an adjective, roly-poly describes someone short and plump: a roly-poly toddler.
