rocket planes
Thrust-powered aircraft
Rocket planes are aircraft powered by rocket engines rather than jet engines or propellers.
Unlike jets, which require atmospheric oxygen, rocket engines carry their own oxidizer, allowing flight at extreme altitudes and speeds.
The X-15 rocket plane set speed and altitude records in the 1960s.
Some early spacecraft, like the Space Shuttle, functioned as rocket planes during reentry and landing.
