rock wren
Canyon-dwelling small bird
A rock wren is a small brownish bird that lives among rocks and boulders in dry, rocky terrain.
In North America, the species nests in crevices and has a distinctive habit of paving a path to its nest with small stones.
New Zealand has its own unrelated rock wren, an alpine bird found only in the South Island mountains.
