rock scramble
Hands-on steep hiking
A rock scramble is a hiking route that requires using hands and feet to climb over boulders or rocky terrain, falling somewhere between a trail walk and technical rock climbing.
No ropes or specialized gear are needed, but the terrain demands more than just walking: The last stretch to the summit is a rock scramble.
Scrambles are graded by difficulty, with class 2 and 3 routes being typical scrambles.
