rock cairn

Trail marker pile

A rock cairn is a pile of stones stacked as a marker or monument.

Hikers build cairns to mark trails across barren terrain where paths aren't obvious: Follow the rock cairns across the ridge.

They also serve as memorials, boundary markers, or burial mounds.

The term is somewhat redundant, since cairn alone means a pile of rocks.
