robocalling

Mass automated calls

Robocalling is making automated phone calls that deliver prerecorded messages, typically for telemarketing, political campaigns, or scams.

The practice became widespread with cheap internet-based calling technology and is now heavily regulated due to abuse: I get three or four robocalls a day trying to sell me extended car warranties.
