risen from the dead

Back from beyond

Risen from the dead describes someone who has returned to life after dying.

The phrase belongs primarily to Christian theology, where it refers to the resurrection of Jesus Christ: He is risen from the dead.

More loosely, it describes anyone or anything making an unexpected comeback after seeming finished: The company has risen from the dead after bankruptcy.
