ride into sunset
Hero's final exit
To ride into the sunset is to depart toward a happy or peaceful ending, from the classic Western film convention where the hero rides off toward the horizon after resolving the conflict.
The phrase often suggests retirement or a graceful exit: After thirty years with the company, she's ready to ride into the sunset.
Sometimes used ironically when an ending is less triumphant than portrayed.
