rice plantations
Flooded crop fields
Rice plantations are large agricultural estates devoted to cultivating rice, historically associated with slave labor in the American South, particularly the coastal lowcountry of South Carolina and Georgia.
The term carries the weight of that history: Her ancestors worked rice plantations along the Ashley River.
Unlike cotton plantations that spread across the South, rice plantations required specialized knowledge of tidal irrigation and were concentrated in specific regions.
