reverse course
Go the opposite
To reverse course is to change direction completely, abandoning a previous path or position.
The phrase applies literally to vehicles or travelers turning back, but more often describes abandoning a policy, strategy, or plan of action: The company reversed course on remote work after productivity dropped.
Unlike simply changing direction, reversing course implies returning toward where you started or undoing what you'd committed to.
