retired jerseys
Permanently benched uniforms
Retired jerseys are uniform numbers permanently taken out of circulation by a sports team to honor exceptional players or coaches.
When a jersey is retired, no future player on that team may wear that number.
Teams typically hold ceremonies to retire jerseys, often displaying them in the arena: The Lakers retired Kobe Bryant's jersey.
The practice signifies the highest organizational honor.
