resilvering

Reflective surface renewal

Resilvering is the process of applying a new reflective coating to a mirror whose original silver backing has deteriorated or become damaged.

Old mirrors develop dark spots or clouding when the silver layer degrades; resilvering restores their reflective quality.

In computing, resilvering refers to rebuilding data redundancy on a storage array after a drive failure or replacement: The RAID array is resilvering—it'll take several hours to complete.
