reserve army
Military personnel reserves
A reserve army is a military force kept in readiness but not actively deployed, available to reinforce or replace front-line troops.
In Marxist economics, the term refers to unemployed workers whose existence keeps wages low—the industrial reserve army or reserve army of labor.
Employers can draw on this pool when needed and discard workers back into it, using the threat of replacement to discipline the employed.
