repeat performance

Doing it again

A repeat performance is when something happens again in much the same way it happened before.

The phrase comes from theater, where a successful show might be staged again due to popular demand, but it extends to any situation that mirrors a previous one.

The connotation can be positive or negative depending on context: After last year's championship, fans are hoping for a repeat performance suggests something desirable, while I don't want a repeat performance of that disaster clearly does not.
