remittent
Waxing and waning
Remittent describes something that temporarily lessens in intensity without fully stopping.
The term appears most often in medical contexts: a remittent fever rises and falls but never returns to normal, distinguishing it from an intermittent fever that comes and goes completely.
The remittent pain kept her from sleeping soundly.
