relay baton
Passed between sprinters
A relay baton is the cylindrical stick passed between teammates in a relay race.
Runners must transfer the baton within a designated exchange zone; dropping it or passing outside the zone results in disqualification.
The term sometimes appears figuratively for anything handed off in sequence: She passed the relay baton to her successor.
