redshifting

Light waves lengthening

Redshifting is the phenomenon where light from distant objects shifts toward longer, redder wavelengths as those objects move away from the observer.

In astronomy, redshift reveals that galaxies are receding from us, evidence that the universe is expanding: The farther a galaxy is, the more its light is redshifting.

The term also applies loosely to any increase in wavelength, as when light escapes a strong gravitational field.
