blueshifting

Light waves shortening

Blueshifting is the phenomenon of light waves compressing as their source moves toward an observer, shifting the light toward the blue end of the spectrum.

Astronomers use blueshift to detect objects approaching Earth: The galaxy is blueshifting, indicating it's moving toward us.

The opposite effect, redshifting, occurs when objects move away.

Figuratively, blueshifting can describe any acceleration or intensification toward a goal.
