redemption songs
Freedom through music
Songs about deliverance from suffering, sin, or oppression.
The phrase gained currency from Bob Marley's 1980 song of the same name, which draws on both Christian salvation imagery and the struggle against colonial and spiritual bondage.
More broadly, any music that speaks to liberation or spiritual renewal: Gospel music gave enslaved people their own redemption songs.
