grey hat

Morally ambiguous hacker

Grey hat describes a hacker or security researcher who operates in an ethical middle ground—not malicious like a black hat, but not strictly authorized like a white hat.

A grey hat might exploit a vulnerability without permission, then report it to the company rather than profit from it.

The term extends beyond computing to anyone whose methods are questionable but intentions aren't purely selfish: He's a grey hat—bends the rules, but usually for good reasons.
