red guard
Mao's youth militia
Red Guard refers to members of paramilitary youth groups mobilized during China's Cultural Revolution (1966–1976), composed largely of students who enforced Maoist ideology through public denunciations, destruction of cultural artifacts, and persecution of suspected counter-revolutionaries.
The term sometimes appears in lowercase when describing similar revolutionary youth movements elsewhere: The protesters styled themselves as red guards of the new order.
