red flag law

Gun-seizure legislation

Red flag law refers to legislation allowing courts to temporarily remove firearms from individuals deemed a danger to themselves or others.

A family member, law enforcement officer, or sometimes medical professional petitions the court, which can issue an emergency order before a full hearing.

Also called extreme risk protection order (ERPO).

The state passed a red flag law after the shooting.
