red-shirt
Delay athletic eligibility
Red-shirt has two main uses.
In American college athletics, to red-shirt is to hold a player out of competition for a year to extend their eligibility: He was red-shirted his freshman year.
The player is a red-shirt.
Separately, a red-shirt is a minor character marked for death—from *Star Trek*, where unnamed crew in red uniforms reliably died on away missions: You know he's a red-shirt the moment he appears.
