rayguns
Futuristic beam shooters
Rayguns are fictional weapons that fire beams of energy rather than projectiles—a staple of science fiction since the early twentieth century.
The term evokes retro-futuristic imagery: Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, flying saucers, and chrome-plated pistols emitting visible rays.
The toy raygun made pew-pew sounds.
Real-world directed-energy weapons exist but are rarely called rayguns outside nostalgic or playful contexts.
