puttees

Spiral leg bandages

Puttees are long strips of cloth wound spirally around the leg from ankle to knee, worn as part of military uniforms or for protection during outdoor work.

They were standard military gear through World War I and into World War II, providing support and keeping debris out of boots: The soldiers wrapped their puttees before the march.
