put-ons

Jokes on someone

Put-ons are acts of deception or mockery—pretending something false is true, usually to amuse or fool someone: His outrage was just a put-on.

A put-on can also be the thing being faked: The whole interview was an elaborate put-on.

The word carries a playful or ironic tone, suggesting the deception isn't meant to cause real harm.
