punched cards

Binary through paper holes

Punched cards are stiff paper cards that store data as patterns of holes, read by machines that detect where holes are present or absent.

They were the primary medium for computer input from the 1950s through the 1970s: The programmer submitted a deck of punched cards to the mainframe.

The cards descended from earlier use in textile looms and census tabulation.
