public advocate
Voice for citizens
A public advocate is an official who represents citizens' interests before government, investigating complaints and pushing for policy changes.
The title appears most prominently in New York City, where it's an elected position that serves as a watchdog over city agencies: The public advocate held hearings on housing conditions.
More broadly, anyone who champions public causes may be called a public advocate.
