public-to-private

Government sells off

Public-to-private describes a transaction in which a publicly traded company is acquired and converted to private ownership, removing its shares from stock exchange trading.

This typically happens through buyouts by private equity firms, management teams, or wealthy investors who believe the company can be restructured or operated more effectively away from the scrutiny and quarterly pressures of public markets.

The public-to-private deal valued the retailer at $6.8 billion.
