property assessments
Real estate evaluations
Property assessments are official evaluations of real estate value, typically conducted by local government for tax purposes.
The assessed value determines how much property tax an owner pays: Our property assessment went up twenty percent, and so did our tax bill.
Assessments may also occur when buying, selling, or refinancing property, though these are usually called appraisals.
