proof of God
Theological holy grail
Proof of God refers to arguments or evidence offered to demonstrate the existence of a divine being.
Philosophers and theologians have proposed various proofs: the cosmological argument (everything has a cause, so there must be a first cause), the ontological argument (God is conceivable, therefore God exists), the teleological argument (design implies a designer).
None has achieved universal acceptance.
The existence of evil is often cited as a counterargument to proofs of God.
In casual use, proof of God may describe something so beautiful or unlikely it seems miraculous: That sunset was proof of God.
