private joke
Shared secret laugh
A private joke is humor that only makes sense to a specific group or individual, relying on shared experiences, references, or history that outsiders wouldn't understand.
The humor depends on exclusivity—what's hilarious to insiders falls flat for everyone else: They kept laughing at something about a moose, clearly a private joke.
Also called an inside joke.
