budget cap
Maximum allowed expenditure
A budget cap is a maximum limit on spending, typically imposed by a governing body or agreed upon by participants.
The term appears most often in sports contexts, where leagues restrict how much teams can spend on player salaries to maintain competitive balance: The new budget cap will prevent wealthy teams from outspending their rivals.
Budget caps also apply to political campaigns, government programs, or any regulated spending environment.
