preseason game
Warm-up contest beforehand
A preseason game is a practice match played before the regular season begins, used by coaches to evaluate players and test strategies.
The outcomes don't count in standings, and star players often sit out or play limited minutes: It's just a preseason game—don't read too much into the score.
