prerinsing

Washing before washing

Prerinsing is rinsing something before the main wash or cleaning—typically dishes before they go in the dishwasher, or hair before applying shampoo.

The practice is sometimes debated: Modern dishwashers work better if you skip the prerinsing.

Also spelled pre-rinsing.
