pomanders

Fragrant pierced orbs

Pomanders are balls or containers of aromatic substances, traditionally carried or worn to mask unpleasant odors or ward off illness.

The classic form is an orange studded with cloves: We made pomanders as holiday decorations.

Historically, pomanders were perforated metal cases holding ambergris or other fragrant materials, worn on chains or at the waist.
