polariser

Glare-reducing optical element

A polariser is a filter or device that restricts light waves to a single plane of vibration.

Polarising sunglasses reduce glare by blocking horizontally oriented light.

In photography, a polarising filter deepens blue skies and reduces reflections: I attached a polariser to cut the glare off the water.

The spelling polarizer is more common in American English.
