pocket monsters

Trainable battle companions

Pocket monsters is the English translation of Pokémon, the Japanese media franchise featuring collectible creatures that trainers capture and battle.

The term comes from the Japanese *Poketto Monsutā*, combining "pocket" (referring to the portable size of the creatures' containment devices) and "monsters." While "Pokémon" dominates in everyday speech, pocket monsters appears in official branding and among fans discussing the franchise's origins: I've been collecting pocket monsters since the original games.
