starter Pokémon
First partner choice
A starter Pokémon is one of the initial creatures offered to players at the beginning of a Pokémon game, typically a choice among three with different elemental types—fire, water, and grass.
The term extends to any first Pokémon a trainer receives: Pikachu was Ash's starter Pokémon.
Figuratively, a starter Pokémon can mean someone's introduction to a category: Taylor Swift was my starter Pokémon for country music.
