pocket mice

Small desert hoppers

Pocket mice are small nocturnal rodents native to North American deserts and grasslands, named for the fur-lined cheek pouches they use to carry seeds back to their burrows.

Despite the name, they are not true mice but belong to a separate family that includes kangaroo rats.

Most species are pale-colored to blend with sandy habitats.
