pin tumbler
Cylinder lock component
A pin tumbler is a cylindrical component in a pin tumbler lock—the most common type of door lock.
Each tumbler consists of two pins stacked in a spring-loaded chamber.
When the correct key is inserted, its ridges push the pins to precise heights, aligning the break between upper and lower pins with the cylinder's edge and allowing it to rotate.
Lock picking exploits this mechanism by manipulating the tumblers individually.
