pie fight
Messy dessert battle
A pie fight is a comedic scene, typically in slapstick films, where people throw cream pies at each other.
The format became a staple of silent film comedy and remains a symbol of anarchic, lowbrow humor: The scene devolved into an all-out pie fight.
By extension, any chaotic, undignified conflict: The debate turned into a political pie fight.
