photoreduction

Illumination causes electron gain

Photoreduction is a chemical reaction in which a substance gains electrons when exposed to light.

The term appears most often in biochemistry and photochemistry, describing processes like photosynthesis where light energy drives the reduction of molecules: Photoreduction of carbon dioxide occurs in plant chloroplasts.

The opposite process is photooxidation.
