phosphene

Rub-induced sparkles

Phosphenes are the spots, rings, or patterns of light you see when you press on your closed eyelids, or that appear with sudden movement, sneezing, or a blow to the head.

They're produced by mechanical or electrical stimulation of the retina rather than actual light: I rubbed my eyes and watched the phosphenes swirl.
