pesetas

Pre-euro Spanish currency

Pesetas were the basic monetary unit of Spain from 1869 until 2002, when the euro replaced them.

The word still appears in historical contexts and older Spanish literature: The meal cost five hundred pesetas.

Some Spaniards still mentally convert euro prices to pesetas for comparison.
