penal codes
Crime punishment rules
A penal code is the body of laws in a jurisdiction that defines crimes and specifies their punishments.
Most countries and many states or provinces organize their criminal statutes into a single penal code, making it easier for courts, lawyers, and citizens to reference what conduct is prohibited and what penalties apply.
The defendant was charged under section 187 of the penal code.
The term is sometimes used loosely to refer to criminal law generally.
