pen friend
Distant writing companion
A pen friend is someone with whom you exchange letters regularly, typically someone you've never met in person.
The relationship develops through correspondence rather than face-to-face contact: She had a pen friend in Japan throughout her teenage years.
Also called pen pal.
The term predates email but still applies to those who maintain friendships through written communication.
