pay-as-you-earn

Withheld tax system

Pay-as-you-earn is a tax collection system where employers deduct income tax from wages before paying employees, remitting it directly to the government.

Common in the UK and other countries, it ensures tax is collected incrementally throughout the year rather than in a lump sum: Under pay-as-you-earn, your tax is already taken out of your paycheck.

Often abbreviated PAYE.
