pantaloon

Foolish old man

Pantaloon has two main senses.

In theater, Pantaloon is a stock character from Italian commedia dell'arte—a foolish old man, often a merchant, easily duped and mocked by younger characters.

The plural pantaloons refers to a style of men's trousers, originally tight-fitting, later any loose trousers gathered at the ankle.

Both senses are now archaic or theatrical: The actor played Pantaloon with exaggerated dotage.

He wore silk pantaloons tucked into his boots.
